In the period from 2009 – 2011 the Nordic Network for German Idealism (www.NNGI.org) is organizing various conferences and workshops for researchers and post-graduate students with interest and expertise in the vast and varied field of philosophy, which takes the philosophies of Kant, Fichte Schelling, Hegel and Kierkegaard as its most crucial point of reference.
The third session will be from the 26th to the 28th of May 2010 at the Siemens Stiftung in Munich, Germany. It is a joint venture between the Department of Philosophy at the Ludwig-Maximilian University, the Department of Philosophy at Aarhus University and the NNGI. At the third session there will be a conference on the 26th and 27th with invited speakers (see the program here) and a workshop for students (primarily at the PhD.-level) on the 28th.
The papers for the workshop are not restricted with regards to theme, but they should discuss or deal with the philosophies of Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel or Kierkegaard. Since the general theme for work within the NNGI is Spirit (Geist), we particularly welcome papers that deal with this theme. They may be historically oriented or deal with systematic issues as the authors see fit.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is April 15th 2010.

Practical issues:
The NNGI will provide funding for travel reimbursement and accommodation during the conference for all participating students up to a maximum of 5000 DKR (about 660 EURO). There is a maximum of 15 participating PhD-students. There will be lunch provided for all participants and an optional conference dinner. More information to come in this regard.

Gode Idealister
Så er det er endnu engang lykkedes Kredsens inderkreds at stykke et såvel interessant som oplysende program sammen. Denne gang er valget faldet på en gammel bekendt af Kredsen, nemlig en vis hr. Kierkegaard, aka. Johannes Climacus. Værket der skal gennemgås er Afsluttende Uvidenskabelig Efterskrift, som vil blive læst i den blandt studerende og andet godtfolk så udbredte og populære “Gyldendal-edition”, mere præcist bind 9 og 10 i de Samlede Værker i 20 bind.

Hvis man har besøgt Idealismekredsens blog indenfor de seneste uger, vil man have oplevet, at alle de gamle indlæg samt bloggens undersider har været forsvundet. Det skyldtes en opdatering af vores webhosts server, som førte til ændrede php-indstillinger, som… For at gøre en lang historie kort: Bloggen har i et par uger været mere eller mindre ude af drift og den webansvarlige – dvs. mig – har ikke lige fået taget sig sammen til at få noget gjort ved det, al den stund, at der alligevel ikke sker det store i Kredsen i januar måned.
Nu skulle tingene imidlertid i det store og hele være ordnet, og bloggen er derfor oppe at køre igen. Forvent et program over forårets møder indenfor den nærmeste fremtid.

Objective Spirit. Beyond recognition?

One of the most important areas of interest of German idealist thinkers – and in particular of Hegel and Fichte – was the objective spirit, encompassing social and political philosophy and the philosophy of history. Some of the most important debates in social and political philosophy at the 20th century can be traced back to the question whether the objective spirit should be interpreted in a social or in a political framework. Is it enough to define the “social” through recognition? Or are there social phenomena (or phenomena of being-in-common) that recognition cannot seize, and that lay “beyond recognition”? If it is so, is this an accidental injustice that can be abolished, or an irreducible factor of human coexistence? And should the “political” be defined as the irruption of something that is denied recognition? Is it better to think politics as conflict or as consensus? What are the ources of the political in today’s world? These are some of the themes that motivate the conference “The Objective Spirit. Beyond Recognition?”
The Nordic Network for German Idealism (NNGI) is a three-year research project funded by Nordforsk (the Nordic Research Board operating under the Nordic Council of ministers). The project organizes international conferences aiming at top-level esearch exchange and at research training for doctoral students from all of the five nordic countries. The project welcomes all research on German idealist philosophy, not only on Hegel, Fichte and Schelling but also on their heritage from Kierkegaard until today’s philosophy. The project’s more specific focus is to evaluate a central idea of German idealism, “die Geisteswissenschaften“, in today’s context.
